Observations on job hunting in Edmonton

• Own a fax machine , or have continuous access to one.

• Ensure you have access to Word version 6 or Word Perfect version 6 if you want to email your resume to a company. Or read their responses.

• Some "third party" employment agencies advertise jobs that may or may not exist; these companies offer to fax your resume to 50 employers for a fee. Little known fact: the phrase "third party" is derived from the Latin "thripartius", which means "we party three-times hearty when we get you to pay us for doing absolutely nothing"

under Alberta law, an employer who pays you monthly can average your hours over the month, to come to the conclusion that you are not entitled to overtime pay. This means you might work 50 to 80 hours for 2 weeks straight without a break, then work 30 hours for two weeks, and end up with simple straight hourly pay for the hours you worked. • The laws regarding pay periods for oil servicing employees (such as Wireline Operators) changed in 2000. Your employer is not required to pay your bonuses for approximately 3 months after the jobs are completed. • Check with Alberta Labour Board for help with any specific questions you have.

• Keep your paystubs, since you, as the taxpayer, are responsible for filing your income tax on time, and will need these as proof if you need to file any complaints regarding non-payment of your final cheque on leaving a job.

If you're new to Alberta get information on Health Care Payments here. Health Care is not free in Alberta, and you can be refused treatment, or billed after the fact, if your health care premiums aren't paid - by you!

Government Listings
• Federal HRDC searches for every region in Canada; Public Service Commission jobs open to the public, Management Trainee Program positions (requires a recent Master's degree to be eligible), Co-Op/Internship Program positions (open to post-secondary students only, check the criteria). WorkInk, specializing in job placement for Canadians with disabilities.
For jobs listed across Canada, check: SkillNet.ca, CareerOwl.ca (the English version), JobsCanada.com. CanadianCareers.com has an interesting page listing job opportunities from A (Aboriginal Job Sites) to Z (well, ok, technically T for both Teaching and Tourism).

• Provincial Alberta Government; Workers Compensation Board; Capital Health (Medical).
• Municipal County of Strathcona; Edmonton Public Schools; City of Edmonton jobs, and how to apply - The City apparently only reviews applications for specific job postings. General applications are ignored.

Searching the Net

Altavista, Jobhunting with Bernard Haldane Associates, and Yahoo! Canada offer searching for Canadian jobhunters.
General browsing can be accomplished through Yahoo! Specific Searches, or Webcrawler.

Don't think I've used many terms that require explanations yet. FLASH produces high-quality graphics in very small files. FLASH will not run on Windows 3.1. FLASH can be downloaded from various sites (such as the APG site listed under I.T. Related jobs).
